Illumine Photography: Capturing the Soul Behind the Business

Through Lynn Townsend’s lens, women discover not just their professional image—but their whole, authentic selves

There’s a moment in every Illumine Photography session when something shifts. The camera comes down. Lynn Townsend guides her clients to place their hands on their heart, close their eyes, and simply breathe. In that pause—that sacred space between who we think we should be– and who we really are– tears often come. And the most powerful images are born.

“I think we all need to be offered that possibility of being seen and honored just as we are,” Lynn explains. “It puts us back in the space of our heart rather than our heads, which is where the connection comes from.”

This is photography as transformation. This is Illumine.

A Journey Back to Light

Lynn’s path to founding Illumine Photography reads like a love story with photography, with purpose, and quite literally with love itself. After studying photojournalism in college and building a career capturing stories for newspapers and magazines, she experienced something many creatives face: burnout.

“I was taught that as a journalist, you’re not supposed to insert yourself into the situation. You’re just observing,” she recalls. “I felt like I really wanted to be a part of the moment and co-create whatever I was photographing.”

That desire for connection would eventually define her entire approach. When she met her husband, David, at a photo gallery over 20 years ago, he encouraged her to start her own business. Thus, Illumine Photography was born—a name that speaks to bringing light forth, to illuminating what’s already there.

For two decades, Lynn and David have run their combined business, David Lynn Photography, photographing everything under the sun. But a few years ago, that original calling returned with undeniable clarity.

“I really had this passion come back, which has been photographing women,” Lynn shares. “It’s something in me that is not going away. It’s what I really, really want to do.”

More Than Pretty Pictures

What sets Illumine apart isn’t just technical excellence, though with a formal photojournalism degree and decades of experience, Lynn’s mastery of light and composition is evident. What makes her work distinct is the depth of the journey she takes with each client.

“In all of my sessions, I just go really deep with people,” Lynn explains. The process begins long before the camera clicks, with extensive conversations and a thoughtfully crafted questionnaire that asks the questions most business owners never stop to consider: Who are you, at your core? What is your business truly about? What do you most long to express?

“I have found that that process is so instrumental for somebody in their business—either seeing themselves for the first time, understanding why they’re doing what they’re doing, or being reminded of both,” she notes.

For branding photography, this means images that don’t just look professional—they resonate with soul-deep authenticity. For portrait photography, it means capturing women at pivotal moments: transitions, transformations, or simply the desire to be seen fully as they are right now.

The Transformation in the Frame

One session over 15 years ago crystallized everything Lynn knew she was meant to do. A dear friend in California had been through a devastating divorce, financial hardship, and the challenges of single motherhood. During their photo shoot together, something remarkable happened.

“As the session evolved, these powerful parts of her kept showing up,” Lynn remembers. “Her posture was growing, her confidence was growing, her eyes changed. It was like she was remembering all of who she was.”

Together, they paired each image with a single word: Beauty. Power. Strength. When her friend watched the finished slideshow, she wept, not from sadness, but from recognition.

“She looked at the images and would say, ‘Is this me?!? This is me?!?'” Lynn recalls. “She just hadn’t seen herself in that way in a very long time.”

That experience became the blueprint for what Illumine offers: not just a photo session, but a return to self.

Breaking Through the Business Mask

In a world of carefully curated social media feeds and buttoned-up business personas, Lynn’s work feels revolutionary in its permission to be whole.

“So many people feel like they have to put on a face—like there’s a version of them they need to be in business that’s separate from who they really are,” she observes. “My work is really helping people combine all of those parts and show up authentically.”

She works primarily with women who are “lighting up the world with their gifts”—healers, guides, and entrepreneurs whose work is more than just business; it’s a calling. Many have been instrumental in her own 15-year health journey, making this work deeply personal.

“I love working with women that are doing powerful things in the world because it’s their calling,” Lynn says. “Nothing makes me happier than seeing somebody do what they’re meant to do and feel so passionate about it. I just can’t help but want to spread that spark and continue to lift them up.”

The Gift of Presence

Ask Lynn what photography has taught her about life, and her answer is immediate: presence and connection.

“Photography is so beautiful in this way that it brings us into the present moment. You just can’t be anywhere else,” she reflects. “When we’re in the present moment, there’s so much magic that just passes us by otherwise.”

Even after decades behind the camera, she still marvels at the vulnerability inherent in being photographed. “It’s just this piece of equipment, you know. But it’s vulnerable. It’s like somebody is witnessing who we really are.”

This understanding informs every choice she makes—from the unhurried pace of her sessions to the conscious breathing woven throughout, to images where clients’ eyes are closed, hands resting on their own hearts, turning inward rather than performing outward.

“I feel like I would still want to do this job even if I didn’t have a camera (which I know doesn’t really make sense)!” Lynn admits with a laugh. “But it really comes down to that connection for me.”

In Her Own Words

The most memorable feedback Lynn has received came from a client who said she was “finally seeing herself in the way that she knew other people saw her.”

“You can hear things from people, but until you’re able to feel it yourself, you can’t move forward in a way that allows your gifts and your beauty to continue coming forth,” Lynn explains. “To know that the session was helpful in that way is just the greatest feedback for me.”

When asked how she hopes people feel when they see themselves through her lens, her response is pure Lynn: deeply human.

“I hope that they see their inner and outer beauty and feel it deep in their bones,” she says. “I find humans to be miraculous. I think it is amazing that any of us can go through this human experience– it’s a hard experience, being a human being. So I just find people miraculous.”

It’s this wonder—this genuine awe at human courage and beauty—that makes Lynn’s work so powerful. She’s not just taking pictures. She’s witnessing. She’s reflecting. She’s illuminating.

For Aspiring Creatives

Lynn’s advice to other creatives centers on authenticity over algorithms, soul over strategy.

“Really listen to the deepest part of yourself and what wants to come forth or what you feel really drawn to—and then trust that,” she counsels. “There are so many rules around business, or what you can or can’t do to be successful. But I think success in this life, if you’re an entrepreneur, is being able to match your soul work with your business work.”

She encourages leaning into what feels scary: “Sometimes what’s scariest—it might not be scary for somebody else, but if it is for you—shows you that there’s something there. A lot of growth, along with potential and beauty.”

What’s Next

While she doesn’t have concrete plans yet, Lynn is drawn to bringing together her background in teaching English as a second language and her work with refugees and immigrants with photography. She recently co-led a retreat and loved the experience of teaching and guiding in that format.

“I would love to bring that work back and see what the next level would be,” she muses. “I think it’s weaving some teaching back in with photography. I feel like it’s still forming, but something meaningful is on the way.”

Whatever emerges, you can be certain it will be rooted in connection, authenticity, and the unwavering belief in human beauty and courage.

How to Connect

Like many great businesses, Illumine has grown primarily through word of mouth—one transformed client sharing their experience with another woman ready to be seen.

If you’re navigating a transition or simply want to capture this moment in your life in a real, authentic way through portrait photography, she’s ready to celebrate you.

Illumine Photography exists to reveal the beauty within women and reflect it back to them– so they can see it clearly, believe in it deeply, and bring it more fully into the world.
