How two souls from different continents created an oasis of healing in the heart of South Pearl Street

Walk into 5 Star Salt Caves Wellness Center on South Pearl Street, and you’ll immediately feel it—a palpable shift in energy that makes your shoulders drop and your breathing deepen. “Oh my god, I feel relaxed already! Why is this?” customers ask almost daily. For owners Markus Bohunovsky and Stephanie, this reaction is exactly what they dreamed of when they first envisioned their wellness sanctuary nearly a decade ago.
But the path to creating Denver’s only authentic Himalayan Salt Cave began with two very different journeys that converged in the most unexpected way.
A Tale of Two Worlds
Stephanie’s story reads like an American Dream manifesto. Born in Saigon near the end of the Vietnam War, she escaped with her family on an overcrowded boat, surviving pirates and storms for three and a half days without food or water before reaching Thailand. At age eight, arriving in San Francisco speaking no English, she became the first in her generation to attend university, eventually earning a business degree from San Francisco State.
Meanwhile, 7,000 miles away in Vienna, Austria, Markus was following a completely different path. After studying mathematics, physics, and computer science at Vienna Technical University, he shocked his parents by abandoning his promising career at 22 to join an Eastern spiritual path for ten years. “To the horror of his parents,” Markus laughs, recalling how he moved to San Francisco to teach meditation and work as a waiter and dishwasher at a vegetarian restaurant.
Their worlds collided at a software company in the late ’90s. Stephanie was working in marketing and public relations, while Markus had finally gotten what his parents called a “REAL job” leading a technical services department. “I knew I would one day own my own business and live the American dream,” Stephanie recalls. “I just didn’t know it would involve 13,000 pounds of Himalayan rock salt.”
The Himalayan Revelation
After Markus founded a successful software company with offices on two continents, the entrepreneurial couple seemed set for a traditional tech success story. But Markus “could not leave well enough alone,” eventually selling his company shares to follow his passion for healing and spiritual growth. While Stephanie continued in the corporate world for over 15 years, Markus spent seven years at the prestigious Barbara Brennan School of Healing, even serving as a teacher.
The couple used their savings to volunteer for two years at an organization creating transformational retreats in the Caribbean. It was during a 2013 holiday visit to Vienna that everything changed.
“We experienced a Himalayan Salt Cave treatment, and it was so transformative that we almost immediately decided to create a Salt Cave in Denver,” Markus remembers. What they didn’t anticipate was the grueling two-and-a-half-year journey from idea to reality.
The Pearl Street Miracle
In 2013, Denver’s commercial real estate market was just starting to boom. Every time Markus and Stephanie found a potential location, prices had risen and contracts had become more restrictive. Their money was seriously running out.
“I remember making a decision, unrealistic as it seemed at the time, that I simply wanted to rent on South Pearl Street and nowhere else,” Markus reflects. “I had fallen in love with the area and did not want to settle for anything less.”
When their realtor spotted a “for rent” sign on an old bicycle shop, they were so frustrated they almost didn’t notice this was the answer to their prayers. Eight months and every penny they had later—plus multiple private loans from gracious friends—they opened their doors in August 2015.
“We knew we needed to produce a profit almost immediately,” Stephanie recalls. “Fortunately, our customers really ‘got it.'”
The Magic Behind the Salt
The centerpiece of 5 Star Salt Caves isn’t just impressive, it’s scientifically sophisticated. Their man-made cave, built from 13,000 pounds of Himalayan rock salt, houses specialized technology including a halogenerator that disperses 2-5 micron particles of pharmaceutical-grade salt into the air. The machine is one of the few in existence that can measure and adjust salt concentration in real-time, paired with a carefully balanced air exchange system and fiber-optic lighting.
“When you’re in the cave, the technology behind it is usually the last thing you’re thinking about, as the stresses of the day melt away,” Markus explains.
Salt therapy, popular in Europe for decades after a 19th-century Polish doctor noticed salt mine workers’ exceptionally healthy lungs, is just gaining popularity in the U.S. But for Markus and Stephanie, the health benefits are secondary to something deeper.
The Philosophy of “5 Star Consciousness”
Years before they even started working on their spa, the couple coined the term “5 Star Consciousness” a philosophy based on presence, precision, love, and care in everything they do. This mindset, born from their transformational spiritual work and refined through Markus’s competitive skydiving (where focused attitude can be life-saving), permeates every aspect of their business.
“There’s a sense of presence and intention in everything we attempt,” Stephanie explains. “It includes the materials we used to build the place, all design decisions, the music we play, the natural fragrances, the lighting, and even the sort of attitude and consciousness we try to embody when interacting with clients.”
Transforming Lives, One Customer at a Time
Perhaps no story illustrates their impact better than the woman who seemed perpetually in a bad mood when she first started coming. Demanding and difficult, she never smiled and complained about everything. But the team kept treating her with the same respect and care they gave every customer.
“Her demeanor changed so slowly that by the time she sent us an email detailing her experience, she had become one of our favorite customers, and we had forgotten how she was in the beginning,” Markus recalls, his voice catching with emotion. “She shared that she was going through extremely difficult times when she first started coming, and that being in our space was the only thing that kept her sane during that time.”
Since opening, they’ve served over 15,000 individual customers, most attracted through word of mouth, a testament to their authentic approach to wellness.
Surviving the Storm
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, many spa businesses didn’t survive. Having expanded continuously for five years, Markus and Stephanie suddenly had to get smaller, be flexible, and “move with the waves.” Drawing on Markus’s experience navigating his software company through the 2008 crisis, they adapted their services and emerged stronger.
The forced closing allowed them to streamline processes, design comprehensive employee training programs, and reflect on their journey. “We were lucky to be able to shelter at home as a couple who enjoy each other’s company, privately and as business partners,” Stephanie notes.
Looking Forward
Today, 5 Star Salt Caves offers more than just salt therapy. Their full-spectrum infrared sauna, ionic foot detoxification, and massage services all operate under their philosophy of promoting health through awareness and self-responsibility. They’re expanding their web store for Himalayan salt, crystal, and natural health products, and adding more treatment rooms as Denver continues to discover the benefits of alternative wellness.
But for Markus and Stephanie, success isn’t measured in square footage or service offerings, it’s in the daily moment when someone walks through their doors and immediately feels peace.
“We love our customers. We love our treatments. Every treatment we provide is something we ourselves do regularly,” Stephanie emphasizes. “Our services greatly improve our own lives. We believe they can improve yours as well.”
In an age of digital overwhelm and constant stress, 5 Star Salt Caves stands as proof that sometimes the most transformative experiences happen when we simply learn to breathe, literally and metaphorically, in the presence of ancient healing wisdom and contemporary love.
