Please tell us your backstory. What was your childhood like? Where did you grow up? Are there any life lessons can you share? Was there an event or challenge in your background that led to you starting your business or career?
Tell us more about the history behind your business, organization, or career and how it became what it is today. How did you get started? Why did you start your business? Why did you choose your industry? What was the vision? What insight or defining moment sparked the start (or pivoting) of your business or career? Were there any challenges that almost stopped you? Who are the other people in the story? Remember the more details you give and the more colorful and interesting, the more likely your story will be chosen.
Are you an artist or creative? Are you a non-profit? What problem do you exist to solve? Are there unique features that make your product or service particularly useful or effective? Are there surprising ways people have benefitted from what you do?
Think about the people you want to help or entertain. These are the people whose business or hearts you’re trying to win. Why do you care about them? How do you want to help or inspire them? Think about not only what you do but how it improves people’s lives.
Do you have a unique talent? Do you use a specialized technology? Are your materials sustainably sourced? Do you use an innovative manufacturing technique?
This type of content both educates and provides insight into the way you run your business, providing the transparency that people crave.
e.g., your company mascot or pet, a fun outing your company held, the unorthodox way your leadership team brainstorms, the unusual ways your team communicates, etc.
Businesses need a driving force to push them forward and keep them moving. Your current business story is driven by what your business does. Your business goals provide additional forward momentum. Your goals are the challenges that shape your business story. Think about ways to talk about how your brand is evolving, what you’re working toward, and how you plan to grow into the future. Sharing these types of stories generates excitement, and invites people into your brand story. Plus, when people know you’re invested in their future, they’re more likely to build a long-term relationship with you.
